Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project - World Breastfeeding Week - Breastfeeding Awareness Month 2014

Thursday, August 7, 2014

It has been an overwhelming joy to participate in the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project, organized by Leilani Rogers, Photographer, throughout World Breastfeeding Week. These photos are to celebrate breastfeeding (and breast milk feeding) mamas. I feel it important to note, breastfeeding sometimes doesn't go as planned (it certainly did not for me). This week I salute and honor all mothers who have tried to nourish their babes with breast milk for however long they were able to do so.

Additionally, I thought I might also say a couple words about why I chose a church setting for this project.

I chose to take breastfeeding photos in a church for two main reasons. First, a church or chapel is a sacred space, and the perfect place to portray a value that is sacred to me (breastfeeding) as well as to all the mamas who participated in the project. Despite whatever religious convictions we may have, I thought it would be really powerful to gather mamas from all over the area to witness to and celebrate the sanctity of a woman's inherent ability to nourish a young child's life.

Second, I chose a church setting as something of a political statement.* I believe mothers should be free to nourish their babes in all places without being discriminated against. That includes places of commerce, public spaces, and especially spaces of worship. On this last point, Pope Francis recently spoke out about the freedom and importance of women being able to feed their babies in church. During a special baptismal service in the Sistine Chapel earlier this year, Francis told mothers not to think twice about feeding their babes if they got hungry during the ceremony. "If they are hungry, mothers, feed them, without thinking twice," he said, smiling. "Because they are the most important people here."

*I should note that the mamas/models who participated in this project may not share my political convictions on this issue. They are mine and mine alone.

Our project has been featured on both Huffington Post and The Stir. What an honor that they shared a photo of mine in both articles! Thank you to all who participated!

Lastly, many of the participating photographers are participating in a blog circle. If you follow the links you can see all of our blogs. Next up in the circle is PBAP organizer, Leilani.
