My First Doula Birth: A Review from the Family

Monday, April 28, 2014

I attended my first birth as a doula-in-training on April 9th, 2014. I supported Brigid and Chris as they brought their first child earth side at University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, attended by the midwives of Delaware Valley Ob/Gyn. Brigid's birth was beautiful and empowered. My being invited into that space was such an honor and privilege. Brigid so graciously sent me this unsolicited review.

It is hard for me to imagine going through labor and delivery without Kristy’s support, pain management, and expertise. Kristy provided strategies to help my labor progress efficiently and kept me focused while allowing my husband to be my comfort instead of my doula. As the pain intensified, she suggested different positions that provided some pain relief as well as hours of massage which made each contraction manageable. Not only did her massage help alleviate my physical pain, but also made me feel like I was not facing the contractions alone. As the hours of labor continued, her presence alone provided reassurance that my labor was progressing well and that my baby and I were both healthy. During the most intense pain Kristy provided a hand to squeeze, encouragement to stay focused, and realistic expectations of the pain ahead. After my baby was born she continued to support me and my family by answering various questions that come with having a new baby--as well as stopping by for a post-partum visit.

I cannot recommend Kristy any more highly. She is knowledgeable, intuitive, and considerate; her role certainly helped me give birth to my daughter without unnecessary pain or medications.

Brigid, thank you for trusting me to attend your birth and support your little family. And congratulations on your beautiful baby girl.
